Power to the People

(Carson City, NEV) June 27, 2002 -  Don’t be held captive by your utility company!  Take control of your energy costs by installing a cogeneration system and have clean, abundant energy for about a nickel / kilowatt-hour.

Cogeneration is not the latest energy industry buzzword... cogeneration power plants have been around for over 100 years.  Few people realize the very first power plant was actually a cogeneration plant designed and built by Thomas Edison in New York in 1882.

“The key to cogeneration has always been harnessing the heat that is traditionally lost in traditional power plants that are only about 30% efficient,” said Richard Langson, chairman and chief executive officer of VectorCoGen.  “For a homeowner, this heat can be used for space heating, hot water, and year-round heating of swimming pools and spas.”

Kawasaki, best known for its motorcycles, watercraft and snowmobiles, agrees with the cogeneration opportunity. As it enters the US marketplace with VectorCoGen and their Home Power Systems – Powered by Kawasaki, Kawasaki engineers have addressed the need for an affordable, reliable energy source.

“The clean-burn, natural gas Kawasaki engine is reliable and efficient,” states Steve Brown, a consultant to Kawasaki and president of Brown Equipment Company.  “The real advantage to a homeowner is the once-a-year maintenance for the Home Power System.  These systems are built to last.”

U.S. Representatives Marty Meehan (D-MA) and Jack Quinn (R-NY) joined U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and James Jeffords (R-VT) in introducing bipartisan, bicameral legislation to promote the use of highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) - or cogeneration - energy technologies.  Senate Bill 389 is now on President Bush’s desk for his signature and has great Federal incentives for cogeneration.

"We need innovative, efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions to our short and long-term energy needs," said U.S. Representative Meehan. "Cogeneration promises greater energy efficiency and reduced emissions. It's a win-win for businesses and the environment … exactly what we need right now."

“Rebates from the Federal government and state incentives will help homeowners take control of their energy costs,” added Langson.  “Currently, three states (California, Texas and New York) offer substantial incentives for the purchase and installation of cogeneration systems.”

Cogeneration is also considered a green-building strategy.  The advantages of cogeneration include Lower Electricity Costs, Lower Thermal Energy Costs, Increased Power Reliability, Increased Power Quality, Independence from outside suppliers and utility companies and high peak power prices, Conservation of our environmental resources, and Qualification for energy rebates and tax incentives up to 30% in states including California, Texas and New York.

“Most natural gas suppliers have reduced natural gas rates for cogeneration,” said Doug Collins, director of marketing for VectorCoGen.  “A homeowner gets the improved price for all their natural gas consumption and that includes water heaters, forced air furnaces, gas stoves and fireplaces.”

VectorCoGen manufactures three cogeneration systems suitable for homeowners and small businesses that range from 1.5 kilowatts to 20 kilowatts in size.  All Home Power Systems – Powered by Kawasaki – come with a three year warranty and qualify for rebates of 20-30% based upon the state of residency.

“When the lights go out in a subdivision near you, your customers will become a lot more interested in your ability to offer them energy options,” said Ron Jones, a green builder, in a recent issue of Professional Builder Magazine. “It might be wise to formulate answers.”

Dan Reicher, DOE's (former) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy agrees and has challenged the cogeneration industry “to double the amount of cogeneration systems’ power deployed in the U.S.”

“Our systems restore the way California living used to be … when we gathered around our swimming pool on a cool fall evening … when energy was affordable and abundant,” added Langson.  “Our Home Power Systems bring that lifestyle back to reality.  Most homeowners will have only a three year payback period, especially with energy needs for a pool or spa.”
