THE
FOUNDATION ORCHESTRA
TO
PERFORM AT CINCO DE MAYO RENO CELEBRATION
From
the tango of Argentina to the rock of Santana,
The Foundation Orchestra will perform a two-hour FREE CONCERT of
Latin Music as part of the 2003 Cinco de Mayo Reno celebration on
Sunday, May 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Harrah's Plaza.
The
free symphonic “pops” concert titled “Simply Latin: A Celebration
of Latin Music” (or in Spanish, “Simplemente Latino: Una
Celebración de la Música Latina”) is presented jointly by The
Foundation Orchestra Association and Cinco de Mayo Reno.
The
two-hour extravaganza will feature up-and-coming local talent as
well as internationally known stars. Included on the program are
Daniel Díaz, internationally recognized bandoneon virtuoso from
Argentina; John Shipley, smooth jazz-fusion pianist (formerly
of Hiroshima); Gregory Maytan, 22-year-old violin prodigy;
19-year-old Latina singer Maritza Chávez; the Rita Cannon
Elementary School Choir (Ms. Dawn Hummel, Director); and a
Mexican folkloric dance troupe.
Leading the musicians will be The Foundation Orchestra’s founding
conductor, Dr. Gary Robert Buchanan of Reno. David C. Bugli,
conductor of the Carson City Symphony will also make a special
appearance conducting “Night in Mexico.”
Other
musical selections planned include passionate tangos from the lauded
motion picture, “Tango”; Mexican folk songs like “La Cigarra,” “Chiapanecas,”
and La Bamba”; the perennial Spanish favorite “España Cañí;” the
romantic “La Flor de la Canela” by the late Peruvian
singer-songwriter Chabuca Granda; and special features with Daniel
Diaz performing alongside celebrated guitarist Pedro Etchebset, both
members of The Tango Camerata of Orem, Utah.
The
legendary Chicano singer Lalo Guerrero, known as the “Father
of Chicano Music,” will perform a set of classic numbers from some
of his best-known albums. Guerrero, now 85, whom Daniel Buckley of
the Tucson Citizen calls “the hippest cat in the room,” was recently
declared a “national folk treasure” by the Smithsonian and awarded
the National Medal of the Arts by President Clinton.
Two
WORLD PREMIERES will be part of the multi-cultural Latin program:
“Cinco De Mayo Overture” and “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra,”
both by Gary Buchanan. Buchanan’s new arrangement of “Oye Como Va,”
made popular by such Latin greats as Tito Puente and Carlos Santana,
will close the program with a bang.
Buchanan and featured artists will be on hand at an after-concert
reception to benefit The Foundation Orchestra Association. Admission
to the reception, which includes VIP reserved seating at the
concert, is by ticket only.
